Tony,
How you doin'?
Colm Barker had no cell in Korea (from Ireland and UK). He wasn't anti technology, he was anti Korean racism which he felt was responsible for the difficulty in obtaining one for foreigners. He also felt it was a way to avoid constant demands for meeting by girlfriends.
ANother friend, Marcus had no cell, nor a computer. On the cell issue, he liked that prople not being able contact him made it easier to ensure people would keep appointments (they cannto rely on clling at the last minute to push the meeting time up or to cancle, or to change directions).
On the computer issue, despite his expertise in teaching English (he taught in his native England and at a uni in Thailand) he was underpaid by his YBM franchise and had to pay 500 a month for his rent in a terrible place, so he prefered to use a PC room rather then spend money in Korea on a computer I think.
WHy did these peeps have no cell or E-mail?
I think it is a tremendous savings not to have one. I use my cell too much.
